Curriculums We Cover: Toronto Elite High School English Programs

Overcoming Major English Challenges for TDSB High Schoolers in Toronto

Students across Toronto face intense academic pressure to secure the elite English marks required for highly competitive university programs. The core hurdle usually comes down to moving past simple plot summaries to build complex thesis statements, structure seamless essay arguments, and deliver the profound, independent analysis that high school literature courses demand.

The Grade Nine De-streaming

Since Toronto public classrooms utilize a single de-streamed English path, 9th graders enter high school with widely varying reading and writing baselines. To avoid being overwhelmed as secondary coursework accelerates, Toronto students must quickly master rapid analytical writing and independent critical reading skills.

Senior High School English Hurdles at TDSB

Grade 11 (NBE3U) and Grade 12 (ENG4U) curriculums demand an immediate grasp of complex critical theory and advanced rhetoric. Securing a top-tier final grade for Ontario University applications becomes incredibly difficult without a reliable, structured system for organizing research-heavy essays and literary critiques.

OSSLT Hurdles at TDSB

Clearing the provincial literacy graduation requirement demands a highly tactical approach. Secondary students must deliver tightly written opinion pieces and precise short-form answers under strict time constraints. Overcoming this mandatory hurdle is essential for earning an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and moving forward with post-secondary plans.

QEA structured Method with High-Quality Lessons

Essay Writing:

How do you write a compelling introduction? What is a good thesis vs. a bad thesis? How do you build arguments around a quote? These are the key elements in essay writing and this is what we teach.

Critical Thinking:

Students oftentimes resort to plot summary without going deep into analysis. They will lose a large portion of marks on Application and Thinking. At QEA, we help our students to brainstorm and dive deep into ideas relating to the text, connecting to issues and themes. It’s important to analyze, not summarize.

Literary Devices:

How do you spot a subtle metaphor versus a surface-level symbol? What is the actual purpose of foreshadowing or irony in a story? How do you smoothly integrate these devices into your arguments? Mastery of literary tools is essential for high-level English, and we teach students exactly how to decode them.

QEA approach to Tutoring English

Building Foundations in Essay Writing and Critical Thinking

High School Level (Grade 9 - 12) - Essay Writing

At the high school level, it is important to develop skills on essay writing and critical thinking. Students oftentimes overlook these important skills and never learn them fully in school. They are often given essays and assignments and struggle on their own. How do you write a good thesis? How do you pick a good quote to include in your body paragraph and build arguments around it? At QEA, we have tutors specialized in English literature to teach you all this, helping our students through English courses, grade 9 to 12.

Elementary English -(Grade 6-8) - Sentence Structures

Kids usually write randomly with no structure. Oftentimes they are blanked out when they are asked to write a paragraph or topic. Writing is a process that kids need to learn how to brainstorm, organize their thoughts and write their ideas on paper, in a coherent and effective way. In our elementary English tutoring programs, we teach effective writing that serves as a foundation for essay writing and high school English.

Grade 11 & 12 English

The challenges

Students at advance level English struggles on essay writing and critical thinking. They oftentimes summarize the plot and writing the essay without a clear thesis.

QEA Insights and Strategies

Tip: Learn Critical Thinking

Most students don't realize that 20-30% of the grades are allotted to critical thinking. To start, the student needs to develop a clear thesis - a strong viewpoint, not a fact. Then develop an argument around it. Next the students needs to ask the significance of certain part of the text. Why is this important? Why does it matter? Such question will help the student to develop the analysis around the text.

Grade 9 & 10 English

The challenges

At junior level in high school English, students have difficulty expressing their ideas in essay, in a concise and arguable form. They face challenges in critical thinking, which accounts to 20% to their grades.

QEA Insights and Strategies

Tip: Learn proper essay writing

Students in grade 9 and 10 needs to master the foundation of each component of essay writing. To start, the student needs to develop a claim that someone could actually disagree with—a strong viewpoint, not an obvious fact. Then, preview the specific roadmap they will use to prove it. Next, the student needs to ensure their thesis answers the ultimate test: "So what?" A truly sharp thesis takes a risk and gives the entire essay a definitive purpose.

Grade 7 & 8 English

The challenges

Students at elementary school often lack proper writing skills, in sentence structure and express their ideas clearly. They write the way they text, or whatever comes to their mind.

QEA Insights and Strategies

Tip: Learn sentence structure

Writing is a structured process, not a guessing game; students must learn how to brainstorm, organize their thoughts, and transfer their ideas to paper in a clear, logical way. In our elementary English tutoring program, we teach these core skills in sentence structures. How do you express your ideas in a variety of sentence structures? We also teach essay writing, which prepares them to high school.
