Physics Tutoring Aurora

Welcome to Queen Elizabeth Academy, where we provide high quality Physics tutoring for students who are attending high school. If you are seeking a Physics tutor, you have come to the right place!

How can our Physics tutor in Aurora help you?

Physics is a challenging subject for a lot of students. The key challenge is that physics is problem solving based. Students are accustomed to math, where they will have a formula and “plug-in” the numbers to derive the answer. For physics, you need to know which formula to use in the first place and how to change the formula according to the situation.

Memorizing steps and equations doesn’t work in physics. All questions in physics are application based, they are word problems. This means that your teacher can change the question slightly and your entire solution - the equation you use, the givens, the approach, will be all different. Understanding the concepts and apply them, instead of memorizing equations, is the key to doing well in physics.

How can our Physics tutor in Aurora help you?

All QEA physics tutoring is one on one private. We teach the full lesson and review what you learned during the week. In this way, you won’t miss anything.

QEA Approach to Physics Tutoring

- How is our tutoring session run?

Private 1 on 1, Lesson based physics tutoring - that focuses on understanding, not memorizing

For each session in Physics Tutoring Aurora, you will get:

  • A full lesson on the concept, review what you learn during the week. e.g. What are Newtons’ 3 laws? How do you apply that to the application problems? What are the steps?
  • Step by Step explanation of major application / thinking problems. Physics students mostly stumbled upon application / thinking problems. Oftentimes they don‘t know how to start the problem. Tackling application problems requires a deep understanding of the concepts and good explanation. Your teacher will change the questions all the time and it’s all situation based.
  • Good notes from our lesson board. As we teach the materials we write everything down - explanations, solutions etc. These are valuable notes you can keep and use for reviewing for your tests.
  • Weekly Physics homework package focuses on application thinking problems. Practicing questions merely from your school homework or textbook is not good enough. You need practice to excel on a variety of application problems. We provide weekly homework focusing on this.

Our physics tutor Aurora will explain the concept to your child, help him/her to build foundations and assign homework during our physics tutoring session

How to get high marks in Physics 11?

Common challenges for physics 11

When it comes to physics 11, it is a challenging subject for a lot of students. It is a combination of calculation and theory. Many students either don’t understand the concept enough to apply it, or they aren’t good in math to carry through the calculation. This is why they find physics difficult.

2 Tips to score higher marks on Physics (from QEA Physics Tutor Aurora)

Tip #1.
Visualize the problem and draw diagrams

From our Physics tutors Aurora

One of the important techniques we tutor our physics students is to visualize the problem. Oftentimes students are too quick jumping into the equation. This is the wrong approach. Remember, physics is not math. You need to first understand the problem. By visualizing the question, you will know the variables and parameters involved, and what is happening. Only then you can apply / manipulate your equations, and plug-in your variables and numbers.

Tip #2.
Strive for understanding

From our Physics tutors Aurora

Remember that physics is more than just answering homework questions. It can be easy to fall into the habit of memorizing equations and hoping that with that knowledge you can sail through the course by plugging in numbers. You need to start off by understanding the concept. Why are you applying the equation in this way? What is happening behind the steps? This will facilitate your understanding and you will be able to apply even if your teacher changes the question. This is the approach we use and it works.

How to get high marks in Physics 12?

Common challenges for physics 12

Physics 12 is an extension from physics 11. By now you need to master your problem solving skills. Physics 12 is more difficult because the concepts are more abstract, complex, and the application questions involves more moving parts. You will encounter projectile motion, objects colliding, objects spinning, rockets launching and so on. With each situation, your teachers can always change the variables and parameters and you need to work backwards / forward to derive the solution.

2 Tips to score higher marks on Physics 12
(from QEA Physics Tutor Aurora)

Tip #1.
Visualize the problem and draw diagrams

From our Physics tutors Aurora

It’s the same important technique we teach in physics 11. This technique is even more handy for physics 12 problems, as they are more complex. You need to understand the problem by visualizing it, only then you will know what variables are involved, which equation you need to bring in, and how to combine them. Trying to plug in numbers to given equation will not get you the final answer. You have to work from the situation. And we teach this important problem solving technique in our physics 12 tutoring sessions.

Tip #2.
Don’t try to do too much in one step

From our Physics tutors Aurora

A common mistake for a lot of students in that they are trying to do too much in one step. They might try to combine multiple equations into a large equation, which makes it very difficult and confusing the solve. Our approach is to break down the equation into pieces. Once you calculate each piece, you can combine them together and get a final answer. This approach will reduce the complexity and avoid having too much algebra in one equation. Therefore you can avoid making careless errors. We teach this approach in our tutoring session and it works!

Study Tips to Succeed

Grade 11 Physics, University Preparation (SPH3U)

Grade 11 Physics can be a very challenging course as the material along with the strategies for problem solving will be very new for many students. Rather than following concrete steps, as in Math, students will need to know which equations to use beforehand, and will need to know how to manipulate different equations to achieve their desired result.

Physics also involves many word problems which can pose another challenge, however the good news is that you will slowly gain proficiency in extracting givens and variables.

This course is important for those who wish to pursue engineering or science in university, and is a prerequisite for Grade 12 Physics.

Inquiry for Physics Tutoring Aurora: 1 (888) 336 0885

It is important not to simply memorize the equations. It is far better to understand the reasoning behind such equations. Try to visualize the situation and identify variables and given in each different problem. Make sure you are tailoring your use of equations to the question at hand, and not just blindly following steps or processes.

In many cases you have to use multiple equations and combine them in different stages. For each equation, tick the variables that you have a number to insert and circle the ones that don’t. Then try to use another equation to find the circled unknown. This tip can guide you through the confusion

Grade 12 Physics, University Preparation (SPH4U)

Physics is often taken for those seeking to pursue engineering in university. Grade 12 Physics is an extension of grade 11 Physics, and if a student has done well in the previous grade, it is likely they will, with hard work of course, succeed in Grade 12 Physics.

This course begins with a review of Kinematics (motion) and Dynamics (forces), which will provide a strong start. Electromagnetism and Light are often the most challenging units.

In Grade 12 Physics there will be the expectation to excel at problem-solving techniques, especially in the manipulation of equations to extract unknowns and answers.

The workload in this course is quite heavy, requiring a considerable dedication of time in order to achieve above 85 percent, however with the right mindset, this course will be very rewarding.

Inquiry for Physics Tutoring Aurora: 1 (888) 336 0885

Physics will require a great deal of practice, and it is advisable to dedicate around 6 hours a week to work through new problems if you desire to achieve above 85% in the course.

Some of the units in Grade 12 Physics are conceptually difficult, such as electromagnetism and light. To better understand a concept, try first to put it into plain English. Imagine that you are explaining this concept to a space alien, or your grandmother. What would you say? What is an electric field? What is Voltage? If you are able to understand the concept, and are not merely memorizing equations, it will make understanding equations and problems much easier.

Tips to succeed in SPH4U Physics 12

Physics tutoring Aurora

The key factor for student to succeed in SPH4U Physics 12, is to master problem solving techniques. Questions in physics are situation based, so it is not straight forward as in plugging in numbers to an equation to solve a problem, which a lot of students mistakenly expect. The student must learn how to derive and modify equations in SPH4U Physics problems, to isolate the unknown variables and list out all the givens, and start from there. One key tip is to draw diagrams so one can visualize the problems, then identify the variables and parameters in that question. We teach these important problem solving techniques in our SPH4U Physics 12 course.

The second factor is to understand the concept. Many students rely on memorizing definition without have a good understand of the concept. For example, what is voltage? Students will memorize a textbook definition without knowing what voltage really is. To master SPH4U Physics 12 course, the student must be able to explain the concept (such as voltage) in their own words. Once the student understand the concept, the next step is to relate that concept to the equation. This means that the student must understand what each parameter mean in the equation, and how they would change when the situation changes. Why is it happening like that? Going deeper into this will take effort and time, but the student will gain the understand and being able to apply them in problem solving situations. Our course in SPH4U Physics 12 provide in depth lesson, including step by step explanation of the key concepts and their application. In this way, it is easier for students to digest the materials.

The third factor is practice. In SPH4U Physics 12, it is critical to practice a variety of questions and get familiarize with them. This will ensure the student to perform well on tests and maximize the test results. In our SPH4U Physics 12 course, we provide a variety of worksheets for our students to practice.
