How to Get Higher Marks in Physics?

Physics is a challenging subject for a lot of students. The key challenge is that physics is problem solving based. Students are accustomed to math, where they will have a formula and “plug-in” the numbers to derive the answer. For physics, you need to know which formula to use in the first place and how to change the formula according to the situation.

Memorizing steps and equations doesn’t work in physics. All questions in physics are application based, they are word problems. This means that your teacher can change the question slightly and your entire solution - the equation you use, the givens, the approach, will be all different. Understanding the concepts and apply them, instead of memorizing equations, is the key to doing well in physics.

QEA Approach to Physics Tutoring

- How is our tutoring session run?
Private 1 on 1, Lesson based physics tutoring - that focuses on understanding, not memorizing
For each session in Physics Tutoring Toronto, you will get:
  • A full lesson on the concept, review what you learn during the week. e.g. What are Newtons’ 3 laws? How do you apply that to the application problems? What are the steps?
  • Step by Step explanation of major application / thinking problems. Physics students mostly stumbled upon application / thinking problems. Oftentimes they don‘t know how to start the problem. Tackling application problems requires a deep understanding of the concepts and good explanation. Your teacher will change the questions all the time and it’s all situation based.
  • Good notes from our lesson board. As we teach the materials we write everything down - explanations, solutions etc. These are valuable notes you can keep and use for reviewing for your tests.
  • Weekly Physics homework package focuses on application thinking problems. Practicing questions merely from your school homework or textbook is not good enough. You need practice to excel on a variety of application problems. We provide weekly homework focusing on this.

Our physics tutor Toronto will explain the concept to your child, help him/her to build foundations and assign homework during our physics tutoring session

How to get high marks in Physics 11?

Common challenges for physics 11

When it comes to physics 11, it is a challenging subject for a lot of students. It is a combination of calculation and theory. Many students either don’t understand the concept enough to apply it, or they aren’t good in math to carry through the calculation. This is why they find physics difficult.

2 Tips to score higher marks on Physics (from QEA Physics Tutor Toronto)

Tip #1.
Visualize the problem and draw diagrams

From our Physics tutors Toronto

One of the important techniques we tutor our physics students is to visualize the problem. Oftentimes students are too quick jumping into the equation. This is the wrong approach. Remember, physics is not math. You need to first understand the problem. By visualizing the question, you will know the variables and parameters involved, and what is happening. Only then you can apply / manipulate your equations, and plug-in your variables and numbers.

Tip #2.
Strive for understanding

From our Physics tutors Toronto

Remember that physics is more than just answering homework questions. It can be easy to fall into the habit of memorizing equations and hoping that with that knowledge you can sail through the course by plugging in numbers. You need to start off by understanding the concept. Why are you applying the equation in this way? What is happening behind the steps? This will facilitate your understanding and you will be able to apply even if your teacher changes the question. This is the approach we use and it works.

How to get high marks in Physics 12?

Common challenges for physics 12

Physics 12 is an extension from physics 11. By now you need to master your problem solving skills. Physics 12 is more difficult because the concepts are more abstract, complex, and the application questions involves more moving parts. You will encounter projectile motion, objects colliding, objects spinning, rockets launching and so on. With each situation, your teachers can always change the variables and parameters and you need to work backwards / forward to derive the solution.

2 Tips to score higher marks on Physics 12
(from QEA Physics Tutor Toronto)

Tip #1.
Visualize the problem and draw diagrams

From our Physics tutors Toronto

It’s the same important technique we teach in physics 11. This technique is even more handy for physics 12 problems, as they are more complex. You need to understand the problem by visualizing it, only then you will know what variables are involved, which equation you need to bring in, and how to combine them. Trying to plug in numbers to given equation will not get you the final answer. You have to work from the situation. And we teach this important problem solving technique in our physics 12 tutoring sessions.

Tip #2.
Don’t try to do too much in one step

From our Physics tutors Toronto

A common mistake for a lot of students in that they are trying to do too much in one step. They might try to combine multiple equations into a large equation, which makes it very difficult and confusing the solve. Our approach is to break down the equation into pieces. Once you calculate each piece, you can combine them together and get a final answer. This approach will reduce the complexity and avoid having too much algebra in one equation. Therefore you can avoid making careless errors. We teach this approach in our tutoring session and it works!

SPH3U Physics 11

Physics tutoring Toronto

SPH3U Physics Grade 11 is one of the most important Science courses in grade 11 for university admission

SPH3U Physics Grade 11 - Course Description

Physics tutoring Toronto

This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore kinematics, with an emphasis on linear motion; different kinds of forces; energy transformations; the properties of mechanical waves and sound; and electricity and magnetism. They will enhance their scientific investigation skills as they test laws of physics. In addition, they will analyse the interrelationships between physics and technology, and consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment.

What is taking SPH3U Physics Grade 11 like?

Physics tutoring Toronto

Quite frankly, Grade 11 Physics can be tough, because it involves using lots of formula, which students are expected to know beforehand. Most of the concepts will be very new for many students. In most cases, problem-solving does not follow concrete steps, as in math. So students will need to know all the formulas, as well as how to manipulate different equations to achieve their desired result.

Physics questions are traditionally full of word problems, and that's another area of challenge to most students, because they'll need to understand the questions, interpret them, then extract the given variables and variations. But with practice, even this can be mastered.

Grade 11 physics is a pre-requisite for Grade 12 Physics and an important course for students who wish to pursue engineering or science in university.

Tips to succeed in SPH3U Physics Grade 11

Physics tutoring Toronto

To excel in grade 11 physics, you can't simply memorize the equations. For your own good, it is far better to understand the reasoning behind every concept. Be sure to visualize the situation so you can identify given variables and variations in each problem. Additionally, you want to be sure you`re applying the equations rightly, instead of blindly following steps or processes.

The complexity of physics is also seen in the use of several equations to solve a single problem. The trick is to identify what you have been given, note their places in the relevant equations, and identify the variables you weren't given in the question. Finally, use this equation or in combination with other equations to find the unknown.

Tips to succeed in SPH4U Physics 12

Physics tutoring Toronto

The key factor for student to succeed in SPH4U Physics 12, is to master problem solving techniques. Questions in physics are situation based, so it is not straight forward as in plugging in numbers to an equation to solve a problem, which a lot of students mistakenly expect. The student must learn how to derive and modify equations in SPH4U Physics problems, to isolate the unknown variables and list out all the givens, and start from there. One key tip is to draw diagrams so one can visualize the problems, then identify the variables and parameters in that question. We teach these important problem solving techniques in our SPH4U Physics 12 course.

The second factor is to understand the concept. Many students rely on memorizing definition without have a good understand of the concept. For example, what is voltage? Students will memorize a textbook definition without knowing what voltage really is. To master SPH4U Physics 12 course, the student must be able to explain the concept (such as voltage) in their own words. Once the student understand the concept, the next step is to relate that concept to the equation. This means that the student must understand what each parameter mean in the equation, and how they would change when the situation changes. Why is it happening like that? Going deeper into this will take effort and time, but the student will gain the understand and being able to apply them in problem solving situations. Our course in SPH4U Physics 12 provide in depth lesson, including step by step explanation of the key concepts and their application. In this way, it is easier for students to digest the materials.

The third factor is practice. In SPH4U Physics 12, it is critical to practice a variety of questions and get familiarize with them. This will ensure the student to perform well on tests and maximize the test results. In our SPH4U Physics 12 course, we provide a variety of worksheets for our students to practice.

How many times a week should you go tutoring?

Usually, 2 times a week would be better, one lesson for learning new concepts, the second lesson for reviewing.

Is tutoring once a week effective?

It depends on your own pace, if you are a fast learner, tutoring for once a week can be effective as well.

Is a private tutor better?

Yes, a private tutor can pay more attention to your weakness, and go throught questions that you think it is hard.

What is the hardest part of tutoring

Lack of motivation: It can be challenging to motivate students who may already be feeling burnt out from their studies. To tackle this issue, tutors can incorporate fun and engaging activities into their lessons and provide positive reinforcement for progress made. Stress and anxiety: Tutors may experience stress and anxiety when working with students who are struggling or have difficult personalities. To overcome this, tutors can prioritize self-care by practicing relaxation techniques and seeking support from colleagues or supervisors. Laziness: Students may struggle with procrastination and lack of motivation, which can hinder their progress. Tutors can help students overcome laziness by setting achievable goals, providing a structured study plan, and offering rewards for meeting targets.

Is a private tutor better

Parents typically view private supplementary tutoring as an effective method for improving their child's academic performance.

How many times a week should I see my tutor

Typically, one session per week (lasting between 60 to 90 minutes) is adequate for most academic subjects. However, for more rigorous tasks such as standardized test prep, coaching for organizational or study skills, or assistance with multiple subjects, it may be beneficial to have multiple weekly sessions.
