An improper fraction is a fraction where the top number is larger or equal to the bottom number. The top number is called the numerator and the bottom number is called the denominator.
Note that improper fractions are just a different way of expressing amixed number. What isa mixed number? A mixed numberis a number written as the sum of a whole numberanda proper fraction (i.e )
1) Divide the numerator bythe denominator.
2) Write down the whole number result.
3) Use the remainderasthe new numerator over the denominator.
Note that this is the fraction portion of the mixed number.
i.e.
1) (number divided by denominator)
2) 2 (the whole number after dividing 11 by 4 is 2)
3) (the remainder is 3, and the denominator is 3)
