The QEA Approach
to Calgary students

Tutoring in Calgary

At Queen Elizabeth Academy’s private tutoring sessions, we offer our students one-on-one, personalized lessons, covering all concepts step-by-step, especially while explaining homework problems.

1. Building Foundations

In math and science, students are expected to build on the previous knowledge as they go from one grade level to another. Hence, a solid foundation is necessary for long-term success. In our math and science tutoring programs, we teach fundamental concepts and help our students to understand instead of memorizing the materials. This is an essential tutoring approach for foundation building.

2. Step by step explanations

We provide easy-to-understand maths and science classes, taught with a step-by-step explanation method. During each session, our tutors pay specific attention to the students' foundational gaps and re-explain the necessary steps to clarify any misunderstanding.

Build your Math foundations and confidence with QEA #1 rated math tutoring program

Math is cumulative. This means that each grade level builds on the knowledge of the preceding, and so on. To succeed, students need to understand this concept and learn to apply it. But the challenge is that most students prefer to take the easy way out by memorizing instead of studying to understand these concepts. As a result, they ignore foundational skills that would help them in the future, only to realize later how it hurts their marks.

QEA is accredited by the Ministry of Education. With our in-depth understanding of the curriculum and robust experience in teaching maths, we can help any child learn maths with ease. The key is our attention to foundational gaps.

Common challenges that most students encounter in math:

1. Weak foundational skills in math

In order to develop sound math skills, students should start at the foundations in Grade 7 or 8, where they'll learn vital skills in fractions, algebra, and integers. In high school, they'll be taught graphing, solving equations, and quadratics. Without strong foundational skills, a student will struggle with math year after year. The best approach is to address the foundational gaps with proper lessons and practice questions.

2. Memorize instead of understand

Most students naturally shy away from studying maths, so they simply memorize things. The challenge with this approach is that they're thrown off balance when the teacher changes the question; unfortunately, they lose a large portion of their marks. To understand math, students need to understand the “why” behind the concepts and steps and apply them. This is why our lessons focus on fostering understanding of concepts with step-by-step explanations on using them.

The QEA math tutoring program is one on one, private.

We focus on foundational building, re-addressing foundational gaps, and helping the students understand and not memorize. We also provide extra practice to strengthen their understanding and skills.

Build your English foundational skills - writing, reading comprehension, and critical analysis

English is a core subject for high school students, as no university program admits students with poor English grades. Students can achieve excellent English grades, but that demands a set of skills, which most of them are missing. These skills include essay writing, reading comprehension, grammar, and critical analysis.

QEA English tutoring program focuses on building 3 critical English skills: reading comprehension, essay writing, and critical analysis. We provide all-round assistance and support to our students based on their school curriculum. Essentially, we teach and help them to develop these skills. In our essay writing classes, for example, we teach students how to write a concise and captivating thesis, how to write interesting introductions, and how to build arguments with quotes from Shakespeare or their novels.

Common challenges that most students encounter in English:

1. Students lack proper sentence structures

These days, students are used to writing short messages on their phones. This style of communication, unfortunately, leads to poor writing skills, which affects them in school. The habit eventually leads to poor grammar and sentence structure. The good news is that QEA lessons are designed to discipline the students into using and building proper English structure and grammar. Therefore, we help them develop their writing skill using a step-by-step approach.

2. Students’ essays lack critical analysis and are penalized for marks.

Critical thinking is another important aspect of students' English grades in high school. But many students are accustomed to just stating the plot summary in their essays instead of providing in-depth critical analysis. As a result, they suffer severe loss of marks and poor grades. At QEA, we teach our students to go deeper into the story, understand it, and link the main plot to other connected themes.

The QEA English tutoring program is one on one, private.

We build our students' reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, while also working with them through their regular school curriculum.
