The QEA Standard and How We Make a Difference

1. Structural and systematic learning approach

We help students achieve their best by putting up a structural way of learning. We accomplish this by providing a proper lesson to help students review concepts, revisit homework in a stepwise order, and mock exams to practice for all subjects. Below is the list of our structural and systemic learning approaches:

  • The proper lesson to review the concepts
  • Provide extra worksheets that mimic test problems
  • Going over homework and application questions step by step
  • Mock exams

It is not uncommon to see many students perform below standard because they usually are given test questions that are way complex than their assigned homework. Therefore, many of these students don’t get to score as high as 80's and 90's. At QE, we provide extra worksheets that are as difficult as what students face during tests.

Homework practices play a vital role in helping students achieve success; we hold on to this belief at Queen Elizabeth. Before students go on break at the end of the session, we assign homework packages to them and randomly check at the beginning of a new session.

We use a combination of lesson/concepts + application problems + homework to help our students achieve excellence and make them fit for admission into top universities.

Most of our competitors would sit back and wait for their students to ask questions, which is an ineffective method because the struggling students don’t know what to ask. Instead, at Queen Elizabeth, we actively teach using the approaches mentioned above.

2. Focus on understanding the concepts and foundation building

We always ensure that our students have a sound understanding of concepts. We provide them with an in-depth knowledge of every topic. For instance, in Math, we make the students understand each topic from basics before proceeding to the complex tasks. The students find it easy to treat complex tasks once the basics are well rooted in them.

We also make students understand the principle behind every lesson; this is to prevent them from getting confused during tests. In most cases, students tend to memorize steps, but they get confused during tests. We help our students to avoid this by letting them have a sound understanding of every step.

3. Our tutors have a deep understanding of the curriculum as provided by the Ministry

Queen Elizabeth is a private school of over nine years with full Ministry approval. Our tutors have full access to the teaching materials and plans. They are well informed about the curriculum. As such, they have an in-depth understanding of the building blocks from one step to the other. They know the requirements and everyday challenges of students in each grade.

For example, one of the main challenges for grades 10 and 11 students is Trinomial. Proper building of this foundation prepares the students well for the more advanced Functions and calculus of grade 12. Many students struggle because of a lack of appropriate foundational structure in lower classes. At QE, we help our students lay up a good foundation upon which they can build on.

4. Our Tutors

Our tutors are not only experts in their area, they are top achiever themselves.

They don't just tutor our students, oftentimes they serve as a role model and mentor to our students.

Queen Elizabeth tutor team is a team with a solid bond; our tutors' have an average tenure of 3 years. Most of our competitors operate as agencies or centers; their tutors are freelancers who come around and go. As such, they often deprive their students of the opportunity to get accustomed to a teaching pattern.

Our tutors are specialists in the subjects they teach. We won’t ask an English graduate to teach Math. Our tutors are well trained and experienced in their fields.

Meet Kosal C.
from the QEA Math team
Kosal is a MA candidate, Mathematics. York University with 5+ years of teaching experience including TA at York teaching first year Math tutorials.
Build your Math foundations and confidence with QEA #1 rated math tutoring program

Math is cumulative. This means that each grade level serves as a building block for the next. Students need to understand the concept and be able to apply. The challenge is that most students tend to memorize math rather than understand, and ignore the foundational gaps, only to find out that it will come back and hurt their marks.

QEA is accredited by the Ministry of Education. We have in depth expertise on curriculum, the foundational building block to the next grade. We can help your child to overcome gaps through easy to understand lessons and step by step explanation.

Common challenges that most students encounter in math:

1. Weak foundational skills in math

To build good math foundational skills, students should start at Grade 7 or 8. Skillsets including fractions, integers and algebra are critical. Then in high school, graphing, solving equations, quadratics are important. Without strong foundational skills, a student will struggle with math unit by unit, year by year. The key is to address the foundational gap with proper lessons, accompanied with practice.

2. Memorize instead of understand

Students tend to memorize math, instead of the understand it, which is the proper way of doing it. The problem with this approach, is that when the teacher changes the question, the student will get stuck and lose a large portion of the marks. To understand math is to understand the “why” behind the concept or steps, and know when to apply what. Our lessons focus on understanding, and we teach students the concepts with step by step explanation on how to use them.

The QEA math tutoring program is one on one, private.

We focus on foundational building, re-address the gaps of the student, to help them understand and not memorize. We also provide extra practice to strengthen their understanding and skills.

Meet Diana J.
from the QEA English team
Diana is a PhD candidate, major in English literature, York University. She has 6 years of teaching experience.
Build your English foundational skills - writing, reading comprehension, and critical analysis

English is a critical subject in high school, since all university admission requires a good English grade. Achieving excellence in English demand a set of skills from the students. Most students are missing these skills: essay writing, reading comprehension, grammar and critical analysis.

QEA English tutoring program focuses on building these 3 skills: reading comprehension, essay writing and critical analysis. We aim to support our students with their school curriculum, and using this to teach them and develop these skills. In our lessons on essay writing, for instance, we teach students how to write a concise and effective thesis, how to develop an introduction to grab the reader’s interests, and how to build arguments with quotes from Shakespeare or their novels.

Common challenges that most students encounter in English:

1. Students lack proper sentence structures

Students nowadays are accustomed to writing short messages on their phones. The challenge is that this habit is translated to their school writing, and therefore, they lack proper grammar and sentence structure. QEA lessons will discipline the students into using proper English structure and grammar, and develop their writing skill in a step by step approach.

2. Students’ essays lack critical analysis and are penalized for marks.

Critical thinking accounts for a large portion of the student’s English grade in high school. Many students have the poor habit of stating the plot summary in their essays, instead of providing proper critical analysis. This will result in severe penalty on their grades. We teach students to go deeper into the story, and to link how the plot is connected to the themes.

The QEA English tutoring program is one on one, private.

We build the student’s skills in reading, writing and critical analysis, while working with the students through their regular school curriculum.

Science Tutoring in Stouffville

Science is an important subject in high school, pathing the way for students to enter life or engineering route to university. There are boundless opportunities in specializing in science in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, engineering and research.

Science is one of the most challenging subjects in high school. It combines theory with calculation (math), in a manner that students need to have a strong grasp in understanding, problem solving and dealing with multiple step problems to perform well on it.

Science is a combination of math, analytical skill, memorizing skills, understanding and applying concepts.

Common challenges that most students face in science:

1. Weak foundational skills on science

Students begin science in grade 9 and 10, and can choose their science path in grade 11, including chemistry, biology or physics. The foundational skills they learned in grade 9 and 10 becomes applicable, and their success will depend on a solid foundation built in junior high school.

For example, in chemistry, if the student has difficult naming compounds and balancing chemical equations in grade 10, then they will face significant difficulty throughout chemistry 11. Science is cumulative, therefore building a good foundation is the important first step to excel in science.

2. Science application problems
(Chemistry, Physics, Biology)

In solving application problems, students are mostly accustomed to plugging in equations similar to math. This is a wrong approach. Science application questions composed of “situation based” questions, which requires the student to analyze deeply before applying the numbers. For these multiple steps problems, students need to visualize the problem, understand which concepts to apply, and which parameters / givens are involved, then he can correctly apply the equation and substitute the numbers. We teach this approach on our chemistry and physics programs with outstanding success on the students.

3. Students tend to memorize science concepts rather than understand them
